Presenting Our Partners: The Tessellate Institute

July 26th, 2016

The Tessellate Institute is a non-profit organization with a focus on producing independent research on the lived experience of Muslims in Canada.

The institute’s website describes the origins of their name: “The word tessellate means to form small blocks into a larger pattern. It was an important feature of Islamic art and architecture, and also signifies the Canadian mosaic. In that spirit, we hope our work will contribute to enriching the great diversity of this country.”

Their research has reached a range of topics, including Canadian Muslim youth participation in political activity, the right to wear a niqab while testifying in court,  and Quebec’s Bill 94 which also touches on the integration of women wearing niqabs in Quebec culture, among other themes.

Recently, The Tessellate Institute partnered with the Environics Institute on their 2016 Survey of Muslims in Canada. The research was featured in the Economist, The Toronto Star, the CBC and more.

In addition to their research, they run a number of projects which focus on protecting the flourishing of Muslims within the broader Canadian public life. They work predominantly in education and the arts—where they specialize in film screenings and video workshops.
